Project Overview

The Muji Vase Lamp redefines home essentials by merging ambient lighting, plant care, and air humidification into one elegantly minimalist design. Inspired by Muji’s signature aesthetic, this lamp was created as part of Muji’s initiative to revamp its lighting products while maintaining a cohesive brand identity.

Designed to complement modern, clutter-free spaces, the Muji Vase Lamp features a removable water reservoir that allows users to place small plants like lilies or roses without interfering with the electronics.

The lamp is activated through an intuitive Squish Press feature, offering adjustable dimming, timer settings, and smart control via the Muji Home App.

By integrating functionality with simplicity, the Muji Vase Lamp brings warmth, tranquility, and efficiency into contemporary living spaces.

Design Overview

The Mujii Vase Lamp is a multi-sensory wellness object designed for modern minimal living. Working across Industrial Design, Packaging, Design Direction, and UI/UX, the project harmonizes form, function, and feeling into a singular, calming experience. Each touchpoint—from the tactile silicone body to the seamless app—was thoughtfully crafted to reflect Muji’s ethos of simplicity, clarity, and presence.

Industrial Design

Developed a minimalist, pebble-shaped form that integrates light, mist, and plant life into one cohesive product. Focused on sensory harmony, user comfort, and spatial efficiency.

Packaging

Created sustainable, low-waste packaging that reflects Muji’s no-brand ethos. Designed for unboxing as a calm, tactile experience.

Co-developed an intuitive app interface for seamless control of lighting, mist, and timers—ensuring a frictionless, mindful user experience.

Challenges

Designing the Mujii Vase Lamp required seamlessly integrating lighting, greenery, humidification, and smart functionality into a minimalist form—while staying true to Muji’s aesthetic.

Using Muji's existing aesthetics

Balancing Form and Function
Muji’s design philosophy prioritizes simplicity, yet incorporating multiple features—adjustable lighting, a plant holder, a humidifier, and smart controls—without compromising aesthetics required careful engineering. Every element had to feel intuitive and unobtrusive.
Preventing Water Interference
Water and electronics don’t mix. We developed a removable water container that keeps moisture separate from the lamp’s electrical components while ensuring easy refilling and cleaning. The challenge was to maintain a sleek, seamless design without visible bulk.
Creating an Intuitive User Experience
Minimalist products should be effortless to use. We designed the “Squish Press” activation for a tactile, natural interaction, along with a dimmer and timer settings for a customizable experience. These features had to be accessible yet discreet, blending seamlessly into the design.
Ensuring Efficient Humidification
The humidifier needed to enhance air quality while remaining silent and energy-efficient. We optimized water dispersion to prevent over-humidification while maintaining the lamp’s compact form factor.
Developing the Muji Smart App
To further simplify and personalize the experience, we created the Muji App—a seamless UI/UX interface that allows users to control the lamp remotely. The app enables scheduling, light dimming, humidification levels, and even smart automation to adjust settings based on time of day or room conditions. The challenge was designing an app that retained Muji’s philosophy of simplicity while enhancing the lamp’s functionality without overwhelming users.
