The Shoji Lamp, created for Miya Shoji Furniture Company, blends the artistry of traditional Japanese craftsmanship with modern versatility in a DIY format. Constructed from solid cedar and authentic shoji rice paper, each lamp is handmade using time-honored tools, joinery, and finishes that Japanese artisans have refined for millennia. The result is a lighting piece that honors heritage while fitting seamlessly into contemporary living spaces. Designed with a removable frame and paper panels, the Shoji Lamp offers multiple modes of ambiance: bright excitement without paper, calming warmth with paper, and a sense of openness when reduced to its wooden base with candlelight. Users can select between a soft, candle-lit glow or an included 45-watt LED bulb for flexible illumination. Finished with natural oils and waxes, the lamp is both light and robust, with maple anchors reinforcing stability. With its elegant proportions, modularity, and handcrafted detail, the Shoji Lamp transforms lighting into an immersive experience — a balance of tradition, functionality, and timeless beauty.

The Shoji Lamp was designed to bring the warmth and serenity of traditional Japanese lighting into modern interiors. Its purpose is to provide a soft, non-aggressive source of illumination that adapts to different moods — excitement without paper, calmness with paper, and openness with candlelight alone. By combining authentic craftsmanship, natural materials, and flexible lighting options, the lamp creates an immersive ambiance that fosters relaxation, balance, and a deeper connection to the art of lighting.
Balancing traditional Japanese craftsmanship with modern functionality posed a challenge — particularly integrating LED technology and candle options without compromising the lamp’s handmade authenticity.
By studying traditional joinery and materials, I designed modular wooden and rice paper panels that could be removed or replaced. This preserved the Shoji aesthetic while enabling easy LED installation, maintaining a perfect harmony between tradition and technology.
The Shoji Lamp was conceived to merge traditional Japanese craftsmanship with modern functionality, creating a versatile lighting piece that adapts to diverse interior environments. The design challenge was to produce a lamp that offers multiple modes of ambiance — excitement when lit without paper, calmness when illuminated with paper, and openness when reduced to its wooden base with candlelight — while maintaining a minimal, handcrafted aesthetic. Modeled with precise dimensions and constructed from solid cedar and authentic shoji rice paper, the lamp incorporates maple anchors for stability and removable panels for flexibility. An optional 45-watt LED bulb and socket expand usability, providing both everyday convenience and intimate candlelit atmospheres. Using traditional tools, joinery, and natural finishes, the lamp honors centuries of Japanese woodworking while introducing a modular, DIY-friendly format. The goal was to create more than a lamp: a timeless piece that fosters relaxation, balance, and emotional connection through the art of lighting.
The Shoji Lamp successfully delivered on its goal of blending tradition with modern usability, offering users a versatile and immersive lighting experience. Testing confirmed the cedar frame and maple anchors provided both stability and lightness, while the removable rice paper panels allowed for easy customization of mood and ambiance. The dual lighting options — LED bulb or candle — gave users flexibility between everyday functionality and intimate, calming atmospheres. Handcrafted with traditional Japanese tools and finishes, the lamp not only stood out as a durable, authentic piece but also created emotional resonance by bringing warmth, calm, and cultural heritage into contemporary living spaces.
