Opening thin plastic bags has long been an awkward, frustrating task — especially for pet owners juggling leashes, gloves, or cold, wet hands. With this insight, I designed Sweet Paws, a small, flexible tool that makes opening dog poop bags (and similar bags) effortless, hygienic, and even a little fun. Crafted from 100% food-grade silicone, the 4-inch ergonomic strip features dog paw shapes at both ends that double as playful design elements and functional grip zones. The flexible, soft-touch material provides the friction needed to separate bag layers without tearing, even in less-than-ideal outdoor conditions.
Say goodbye to fumbling with stubborn plastic bags! PAWWS is a compact, food-grade silicone tool designed to make opening dog poop bags, produce bags, or trash liners quick and effortless. Featuring playful paw-shaped grip ends, it works even with wet or gloved hands. Lightweight, portable, and dishwasher-safe, PAWWS attaches easily to your leash or keychain — the perfect walk companion in bone white, bark brown, or leash red.
Dimensions: 4 in (L) × 1 in (W) Shape: Slightly curved ergonomic strip with paw-shaped grip ends Material: 100% food-grade silicone, flexible and durable Surface: Soft-touch, non-slip texture for friction and control Weight: Lightweight and portable, attaches easily to leash or keychain Functionality: Works with (poop bags, produce bags, wet or gloved hands. PAWWS was designed with a clear purpose: to solve the everyday frustration of opening thin plastic bags, particularly dog poop bags, in real-world conditions. The goal was to create a simple, ergonomic, and playful tool that worked for pet owners of all ages, including those with reduced dexterity or limited hand strength.
The biggest challenge was creating a product small and flexible enough to open thin plastic bags without tearing, while maintaining durability and ergonomic comfort for different users — including seniors and people with reduced dexterity.
I iterated multiple 3D-printed prototypes with varying silicone hardness levels to test grip and flexibility. Through repeated trials, I refined the shape into an ergonomic strip with paw-shaped ends, achieving both functionality and charm while ensuring the product worked in wet or gloved conditions.
Using SolidWorks for modeling and KeyShot for rendering, I developed a compact, curved form with paw-shaped grip zones that combine charm with functionality. To validate the concept, I tested the flexibility and durability through multiple 3D-printed prototypes, ensuring the final design could separate bag layers effectively without tearing. By selecting 100% food-grade silicone as the production material, the product achieved the necessary balance of softness, grip, and durability while remaining safe, washable, and portable.
The final design successfully transformed a small daily frustration into a playful, practical tool. Prototyping confirmed that the silicone body provided the right balance of flexibility and grip to open bags quickly, even in wet or gloved conditions. The paw-shaped ends not only improved functionality but also added a memorable, personality-driven aesthetic that resonated with pet owners. By marketing the chrome-inspired “shiny object” appeal through bold colorways like Bone White, Bark Brown, and Black PAWWS positioned itself as both a problem-solver and an accessory. The result is a lightweight, durable product that attaches easily to a leash or keychain and enhances the walking experience while standing out in a crowded pet accessory market.
PAWWS is a compact, silicone tool designed to make opening thin plastic bags fast, clean, and frustration-free.
